Getting Ready for my First Craft Fair

My awesome craft aprons!
Pillows in need of stuffing!
My sis making my display!
When I started my business in January, I had no idea what exactly I was getting myself into. I had imagined for years, what it would be like to have my own craft business, but I never thought it would be such an overwhelming experience so far.

Overwhelming, that is exactly the word I would use to describe the feelings leading up to my first craft fair. I was so excited when I got my acceptance letter in the mail for one of the largest and best craft festivals in the Bay Area, the Alameda Art and Wine Faire. I go to this fair every year as a customer and this time I am going as a vendor. I would have never imagined that this amazing fair would be my first!!! Here are a few tips I have learned, so hopefully next time it will be less overwhelming!

The first thing I realized, after the excitement wore off was that I was very lacking in inventory. I had some items posted on Etsy, but I was nowhere near the numbers I needed for an actual craft fair. So with one month left to the fair, I started crafting like crazy! I holed up in my apartment for days at a time, leaving only to make frequent supply runs to local craft stores. With only a week left before the fair, surprisingly, I think I am pretty well prepared. I have reached my goal of hats and scarves. All I have left to make is one more quilt and finish stuffing my pillows. So my first word of advice for anyone doing a craft fair is to not procrastinate until the month before like I did. But even if you do, it is possible to get everything done in time!

One saving grace through this overwhelming time has been my sister. She has helped me tremendously! She has supported my decision of starting my own business and has never wavered in her belief that I could do it, even when I doubted myself. Another great thing about her is she thinks about the logistics of things and is a great plan ahead type of person. I am absolutely not that type of person as can be seen in my mad dash of crafting before the event. Without her, I would have been scrambling to the very end, but she has made the process easy and thought of things that are often overlooked but extremely needed. For instance, she got me craft aprons with my logo (that she designed) embroidered on them for my birthday. This was in April, before I had even thought about selling in person. (see how she thinks ahead!) She also is practical. I have been crafting all these items and had absolutely no clue how to make them into a display. Lucky for me, my sister is creative as well as practical. One day while driving home from work she saw a pallet by the road, discarded. She had a brilliant idea to create it into a display rack for the paintings I will be selling! She is amazing! So my second piece of advice would be to have a supporter who thinks differently then you, so that all the bases are covered, because it is impossible to do it all yourself.

So with my crafts ready and my displays done, I am ready to rock this craft fair! Stay tuned for details and tips on the actual event. I hope to see you there this weekend at the Alameda Art and Wine Faire, July 25 and 26th, 10-6pm on Park Street in Alameda, Ca. The Business of Business Cards

4/14/2015

Business cards are a necessity to any business, especially a small creative business like Handmade Hill. Since my business is small and just starting out, I was not sure how I wanted to create my business cards. Should I get them professionally done? Should I design them and have someone else print them? Or should I create them and print them myself?

Originally, I tried doing it myself with mixed results. I used clip art and Microsoft Word to create a template with a logo and my information. I was not very thrilled with this first product. It looked plain and it seemed to lack the personal touch, since the images I used to create my first logo were royalty free clipart. The cards had all the information but lacked the wow factor I was hoping for.

So I looked into getting my business cards professionally done. I couldn’t believe how expensive it was to have someone design something as simple as a business card for me. There was no way that I could fit that into my budget, so I opted for a compromise. If I could design it, maybe I could have someone print them! It would not only save me time and money, it would give the cards a professional look as well as a handmade feeling. I thought this was definitely the way to go.

The only problem was that I am very crafty when it comes to sewing, but drawing is not my forte. Luckily, my amazing sister is very skilled and generous. She designed and drew multiple (and I mean multiple) logos for me to choose from. And it was the last design that I fell in love with! I thought I was set. I had my information, my awesome design, and all I needed to do was to put them on a card and get them printed!

I wanted to give money to local businesses (being a local business person myself) so I set out to try to find a printing place that could put it all together and print my cards. This is when I hit another dead end. All the print shops I looked into needed the design to be a Photoshop file. Being technologically lacking and financially lacking to buy and learn the program or pay someone to make my logo into a ps file, I was stuck. I decided to widen my printing options to an internet printing company like Vistaprint.

I had heard great things about how quick, easy, and affordable Vistaprint was so I still had hope to get my business cards printed by a third party. I searched through their many templates for business cards (which are endless). But I couldn’t quite find what I was looking for. The business cards looked amazing but choosing a predesigned template seemed to decrease the handmade feeling exponentially.

So in the end, I decided to return to my original thought of making the cards myself. The results were amazing! I cut the base card from different colors of cardstock. I then printed the amazing logo my sister made on full sheet label paper so that I could cut them out as stickers. The last thing I did was print my information on colored paper in an inch wide strip. After all was printed, I wrapped the strip around the base and secured it with my logo sticker. Finally, I was satisfied. The cards are cute, handmade, and have the wow factor I was looking for. Since I did them myself, they are fully customizable and unique! It took longer to print and put them together myself but the effort paid off. And it was nice to enjoy a relaxing evening watching TV while constructing the cards.

What I learned from this is: Don’t be afraid to do it yourself. I made exactly what I wanted, stayed in budget, and was more pleased with the outcome then I would have been taking it to a third party. I guess with a business named Handmade Hill creating my business cards by hand is very fitting! Knitted Square Hats

2/18/2015

I have always been a fan of quirky style. I like when people take chances and stray from traditional fashion styles. It not only adds flare but also fun to any outfit. This was the mentality behind my knitted square hats. They are fun. They are quirky. And they add flare.

I first got the idea to make square hats a few years ago. I am not a very talented knitter, so I never got the hang of creating a rounded knitted hat without causing a big bump at the top of the head. This required a pom-pom to disguise my lousy knitting skills. I stayed away from hats and stuck to simple loom knitting of straight line items such as scarfs. At a craft fair, I saw felted square hats made to look like animals. I thought they were simply fabulous. I tried some on even though I really hate the feeling of handmade felt. Granted it was cute, but it still felt icky, was way out of my price range ($40+), and didn’t allow any breath-ability which made my head sweat. I reluctantly passed the hat by, but it had set my mind thinking.

If it is possible to make a square felt hat, would it be possible to make other types of square hats?

I went home that night and started tinkering with my looms and never-ending supply of yarn. A couple hours later and ta da: the knitted square hat was born. I have made many of these hats and I just love the look of them. The square shape gives the appearance that the wearer has ears! Instead of animal hats, I decided to use a more traditional look of knitted hats by skipping the animal theme and adding cute buttons instead.

The unique thing about my knitted hats is that there are never two alike. I collect buttons from all over the place. I use upcycled ones from old clothes, buy new ones from craft stores, and ones are often given to me as gifts from my friends that know just how much I love buttons. My favorite place is to get them from SCRAP in San Francisco. They have bins and bins of buttons that have been donated from businesses and individuals. I could spend a lifetime searching these bins trying to find the perfect ones. I also never buy my yarn in bulk. I like to find forgotten yarn at the White Elephant Sale in Oakland, yard sales, and of course SCRAP. It is amazing how much new yarn costs. It is even more amazing that so many people resell new unused yarn, especially since it costs so much. By reusing in this way, it helps me keep my products affordable and unique!

The hats above as well as many more are currently available in my shop! Use the promo code BLOGPOST to receive 10% off your purchase!
